Public Participation and Education Action Plan

Scene/Common Name- Kids learning about wetlands at Wetland Reliant Booth at Bay Day 2001The Public Participation and Education Action Plan is a support action plan intended to support the implementation of all other action plans. It was developed to establish effective, ongoing public involvement with Galveston Bay resource management efforts at all levels; to improve future stewardship through education of students and the adult public concerning the Bay ecosystem; and to invoke the public commitment and political will necessary to achieve effective comprehensive management. The Galveston Bay Council has representatives from many partners of GBEP and sets the standard for participatory guidance of a state agency program. The specific goals of this action plan are to:

  • Facilitate public involvement in Bay policy and management
  • Increase education and outreach regarding issues affecting the estuary
  • Increase volunteer involvement in the ongoing stewardship of the estuary
  • Expand and sustain local government involvement and support
  • Assure effective communication with and outreach to specific by user groups

The Public Participation and Education Subcommittee of the Galveston Bay Council is charged with facilitating implementation of the Public Participation and Education Action Plan through our GBEP Partners.

Results!

  • The public's attitude toward the environment and the bay are monitored by the Texas Environmental Survey. Results of this research provide the GBEP subcommittees with useful information on the public's views of environmental issues and through trend analysis provides a picture of how effective outreach efforts have been in the past.
  • Planning for the biennial State of the Bay Symposium is another stakeholder driven activity which provides a form for sharing results of Plan implementation demonstration projects, results of monitoring and protection programs, and current updates on the state of the bay.
  • GBEP has implemented specific programs and initiatives to further outreach and education efforts.
