Public Health Protection Action Plan
The Public Health Protection Action Plan was developed to maintain and enhance the Galveston Bay environment, to ensure seafood produced is safe for human consumption, and to ensure water quality is safe for contact recreation. The specific goals of this action plan are to:
- Reduce potential health risk resulting from consumption of seafood contaminated with toxic substances
- Reduce oyster reef harvest closures
- Minimize risk of water-borne illness resulting from contact recreation
The Water and Sediment Quality Subcommittee of the Galveston Bay Council is charged with facilitating implementation of the Public Health Protection Action Plan through our GBEP Partners.

Seafood Consumption Safety Program
GBEP and DSHS partnered to develop a Seafood Safety Consumption Program. Through this joint effort, standard sampling methodologies have been established for Galveston Bay. In 2001 the DSHS completed a comprehensive risk assessment of seafood through the Galveston Bay Complex. For the latest information on seafood safety in Galveston Bay, click here.
