Spills and Dumping Priority Problems

Accidental spills or deliberate dumping of oil and other toxic materials affect both aesthetics and ecological functions of Galveston Bay. The concentration of industry, shipping operations and urban development in the watershed puts the bay at risk of spills.

Scene/Common Name- Tires on Cedar Bayou
Credit- Eddie Seidensticker, USDA Natural Resources Conservation ServiceEstuarine debris represent a serious aesthetic and ecological concern in Galveston Bay. Debris are concentrated along the bay's and tributaries' shorelines, where it accumulates due to the actions of winds, currents, and waves. Floating debris, particularly plastic, can harm wildlife, entangle propellers and clog the intakes of marine engines and industrial facilities.
