Small Business

Did you know that your daily activities impact the bay?
If your business is located in the Houston-Galveston Area, it probably lies within the Galveston Bay Watershed.  How you operate your business potentially affects the bay and its inhabitants.

Why is the bay important to my business?
Galveston Bay provides substantial economic benefits and supports a variety of industries — commercial fishing, recreatioAutomotive Shop: Pollution Prevention Visitn, shipping, tourism, etc.  These activities directly depend upon the health and productivity of the bay.  Also, the bay's importance to the local economy and quality of life helps attract your customers.

Why is pollution prevention important for small businesses?
Four reasons:

  1. Economic — it pays to reduce waste.
  2. Regulatory — it may be required by law.
  3. Liability — it’s your responsibility.
  4. Public concern — it’s the right thing to do.

How can my business help?
Your business can help reduce help in several ways!

Reduce your contribution of nonpoint source pollution (NPS).  Nonpoint source pollutions consists of constituents in water (including pollutants) originating from diffuse, land-based sources, and generally transported in runoff from precipitation.  For example, every driver can reduce nonpoint source pollution by making sure that his or her car does not leak motor oil, antifreeze or other automotive fluids. For more information on how to reduce nonpoint source pollution, click here.

Check out A Guide to Pollution Prevention for Small Businesses.  This manual is designed to help small businesses improve the quality of their operations and to reduce nonpoint source pollution — a major concern for the estuary.
