Director's Welcome

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Galveston Bay Estuary Program (Estuary Program) Web site. The Estuary Program always seeks citizens and organizations to help preserve the Galveston Bay for generations to come.  I hope you find our Web site resourceful and supportive of your desire for conserving Texas’ largest bay estuary.

Our region's prosperity depends on Galveston Bay's viability.  Its ports, transportation industries, and proximity to rich petroleum reserves form the core of the Houston-Galveston area economy … and play a crucial role in the economic health of Texas and the United States.  The Bay also provides a great regional attraction — making this a close, coastal treasure for all to enjoy.

The Bay does more than support the human and environmental infrastructure that drives our economy.  It provides seafood, recreation, peace and solitude.  For example, people come from all over the country to go fishing in Galveston Bay.  Others visit from around the world to witness the great migrations of hundreds of species of migratory birds.  And locals enjoy the recreational opportunities the Bay and its watersheds have to offer:

  • swimming on clean beaches,
  • canoeing in tree shaded bayous for rare piping plovers and prairie chickens or
  • watching a dolphin’s graceful dance from the Bolivar ferry.

The Bay truly enhances the overall quality of life of those living around it!

Please join us in preserving and protecting this national treasure for our children and our children's children. Our success depends on you and the things you do at home and at work.  So, visit this site over and over again.  Share it with your neighbors, friends, and colleagues. And lastly, please give us your feedback … it was created for you — our most valued customer and greatest asset.

Sincerely,

Helen E. Drummond
Program Director
